What to Bring Hiking – A Checklist

what to bring hiking checklist

What to Bring Day Hiking

There is nothing that compares to spending a day in the woods or slowly ascending a mountain. Every time I need a reset or just need to get some space, engorging myself in nature is my top go to.

Regardless of why you’re hiking or where you plan on going, there are a few key essentials to make sure your trip is safe and fun! To figure out what you need for your hike, there’s a few things to consider. The first consideration is how long you plan on being on your hike and will you be camping? What is the weather predicted to be like in the area you’re hiking? Are you going to be in a remote location for most of the hike?

All of the previous questions go into deciding what kind of clothing to take with you, if any extra safety gear should be brought, and how much food you should bring with you. There’s a lot of options for hiking gear to take with you, so be sure to pay attention!

Also, if you’re looking to get hiking gear for a friend, check out our gifts for hikers guide!

Day Hiking Checklist

There will be sub-items to these that fill specific purposes, but the following list is composed of what you should keep in mind when planning a hike.

  • Clothing (depending on weather)
  • Hiking boots/shoes
  • Food (however many meals you’ll miss plus snacks)
  • Water
  • Safety equipment (via-ferrata if needed and first-aid kit)
  • Navigation (map or phone with service)
  • A hiking bag to carry it all!

Hiking Clothing

The clothing you bring on a hike will depend mostly on the weather and how long you’ll be on the trail.

If you’re going hiking in the winter, make sure you have an adequate hiking jacket, multiple layers depending on the temperature. Likewise, ensure you have the right clothing for hotter climates as well. That includes thin clothing that covers your skin to avoid sunburns!

Hiking Boots-Shoes

Another VERY important item to consider when preparing for a hike. You’ll spend a long time on your feet, possibly traversing rough terrain, it’s important to make sure your feet are well protected!

You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on good hiking boots, but I will say I spent about $250 on a pair of Lowa Gore-Tex boots roughly 7 years ago and they’ve yet to give me any issues. So remember, buying a set of hiking boots may be a decade-long investment!

Don’t forget about socks! It didn’t take me long to learn the lesson of having a proper pair of socks when hiking (thank you professor blister). I recommend high quality compression socks that help circulation and feel comfy!

hiking snacks

Food

I feel like this one goes without saying, but it’s understandable that some people underestimate how much they’ll need. You’ll want to have plenty of healthy carbs and have enough food to replace all of the calories you lost while hiking. If you’re on a short day hike, having some snacks to hold you over might be all you need.

However, if you plan on camping and cooking, make sure you bring enough food to replace the meals you miss!

Water

I’ve gone hiking and left behind food, but you should always triple-check the amount of water you need for a hike or camping trip. During one of my hikes in New Hampshire, about halfway through I ran out of water because I didn’t realize how long the hike would take (I’ve learned a lot since then). There is no worse feeling than that, running out of water at the top of a mountain. Needless to say, my legs were fairly shaky by the time I reached the end.

If you’re curious to know how much, check out REI’s article on hydration basics!

Safety Equipment

Another important thing to consider on any outdoor trip, is how to stay safe!

Every hiking trip should have at least a small first-aid kit.

That’s not the only piece of safety equipment that you might need for a hike. Most activity guides will offer what safety equipment is needed for what you’ll be doing. For example, if you’re on a trail with dangerous parts to clip into, you’ll also need climbing gear and a via ferrata.

Some hikes will have minimal cover and require sunscreen. It all depends on what your trip entails, so make sure you look up the safety equipment specific to your hike.

hiking navigation

Navigation

You’re out in the wild (maybe), trees may be obscuring your vision, and it’s an unfamiliar area, getting lost happens.

The best way to not get lost is to prepare in advance and have the right navigational tools. This may be a map and a compass, but not many people know how to properly use a topographical map. There’s nothing wrong with that, but make sure you know how to read a map if you bring one.

Most people will opt to have a GPS tracker or ensure their phone has service (that’s my preference).

Hiking Backpack

Where are you going to carry all of this gear? A hiking backpack!

Hiking backpacks come in a variety of sizes and prices. I have two hiking bags depending on the kind of hike. A day hiking bag (small and lightweight) and a larger trekking bag that is essentially a rucksack for hiking to a camping spot.

There are some great options for day hike bags here!

Hiking Extras

There are some extra things you can take with you that may come in handy but aren’t really needed.

  • Flashlight
  • Binoculars (wildlife spotting!)
  • Camera
  • Cellphone
  • Personal ID

Have fun and be safe!

Nothing compares to a nice day on the trail, but make sure you’re safe! Hopefully, this short checklist helps and makes you more prepared for what to bring hiking!

Best Hikes in Rhode Island

*DISCLAIMER* – If you’re traveling during COVID lockdown – be sure to check the state and local guidelines for travel requirements during COVID-19.

Best Hiking Trails in Rhode Island

Rhode Island may be the smallest state, but in my years of living here it’s had a lot to offer. The Ocean State has a rich outdoor experience a plenty to offer for the traveling adventurer and has a lot more to do than just things to do in Providence.

The state isn’t usually a destination for the avid hiker as it’s generally flat. In fact, the highest elevation in the state is a mere 812 feet. Needless to say, hiking in Rhode Island probably won’t leave you breathless.

Regardless, with hikes consisting of peaceful wildlife and ocean views, there is still plenty to appreciate. You’ll find some trails taking you down the seaside. Splashing waves and roaring seagulls aren’t the usual tunes of nature you hear on a hike, which is one of the things that makes hiking in the Ocean State so special.

Preparing for a Hike

Before leaving for any hike, there are a few steps to take to properly prepare. Being safe and adequately prepared are a must during any outdoor adventure! So, here are some tips to preparing for your hike!

Navigation

Have any required navigation tools to ensure you always know where you are and where you’re going. Most hikes on this list will be small trails and having a phone with GPS will suffice. But, it always helps to have a map and compass if necessary.

Water & Food

Many people underestimate just how dehydrated a simple hike can make you. So, ensure you drink plenty of water prior to your hike and have some with you in your preferred container. Don’t forget about carrying snacks and a meal if you plan on hiking all day!

Weather Protection

Be prepared for whatever the weather may bring. Being on a peaceful hike only to be interrupted by a downpour is horrible. Look up the weather for the area in advance and ensure you have the proper clothing for the temperature, waterproof gear for rain, and sun protection for those extra sunny days.

Safety Gear

This includes a First-Aid kit, emergency radio, and any other gear suggested by local wildlife professionals or park postings. Look up any possible wildlife concerns or other suggested items for the trial you plan on visiting!

Hiking Backpack

You’ll need something to carry all of these items in! Depending on the length of your hike, a simple daypack might be all you need. If you’re planning a camping trip then a larger bag may be needed to fit everything.

*If you’re planning on doing some hiking around a camping trip, be sure to check out our camping for beginners guide to help prepare!*

Newport Cliff Walk

Newport Cliff Walk

What some will call of peaceful stroll, the Newport Cliff Walk spans the Newport coastline and is fairly accessible. While it’s not very strenuous, there is a section of rock scrambling. Don’t expect intense bouldering, but you should still be careful!

On top of the wonderful hike down the coast, the Cliff Walk goes past the notorious Newport Mansions. Depending on when you go, your short hike may turn into a tour of some of Newport’s best architecture.

Clay Head Trail

Block Island is a common tourist destination for those visiting Rhode Island and locals. In addition to the numerous things you can do on Block Island, hiking is a great way to spend a sunny day here. Block Island is a mere 7 miles long and the trail crisscrosses throughout the island offering a look at some of it’s most breathtaking views.

The trail extends 3.5 miles and is dog friendly as long as they’re on a leash. There’s more to do than just bird watching and experiencing nature on this trail, Block Island recently started the Glass Float Project, a constant scavenger hunt for glass floats around the island.

Watchaug Pond Trail

A lengthy 11 mile long trail, expect to spend the day enjoying the beautiful pond and chirping birds. This is another hike that allows dogs as long as they’re on a leash, so bring your furry friend along!

As a disclaimer, some people have stated they got lost or misdirected when hiking along the trial. While the trail is marked fairly well, always be sure that you’re on a designated hiking area.

Jerimoth_Hill_Summit

Jerimoth Hill

A simple 0.3 mile hike that you probably won’t even break a sweat completing. But, it’s not there to be a workout, this hike takes you to Rhode Island’s highest point at an astounding 812 feet (I know, riveting).

This trail is meant to be a short outing to enjoy nature and mark another trial off your list.

Rocky Point Walking Trail

An easily paved trail that extends a short 1.6 miles. The Rocky Point Trail is fairly easy and more of a leisurely stroll along the Narragansett Bay than an intense hike.

The trail borders the once great Rocky Point Amusement Park. If you want a little more difficulty and adventure, simply veer off the trail to explore the now abandoned park.

sachuest point national wildlife

Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge Trail

A beautiful hike with a view of the ocean from almost every spot. The 2.4 mile loop offers an easy hike and isn’t talked about enough. You may be wondering what you’ll see here as it’s a wildlife refuge. There are numerous spotting’s of deer in the area and you’re almost certain to encounter them depending on the time of year. There is also a reported coyote pack that is monitored in the area.

If you’re looking for a great place to rest or have a picnic, venturing off the trail will usually yield a secluded beach to relax on.

Weetamoo Woods Trail, Weetamoo Woods

An easy to moderate hike that extends 4.7 miles. The Weetamoo Woods themselves have a rich history and were once home to the Pocasset people who fished and farmed in the neighboring areas. The trail offers some bridges and low spots may become muddy, it’s recommended to have some form of waterproof hiking gear and boots.

This isn’t the only trail in the woods and there is plenty to explore. Check here for a detailed map of the area and trails to choose from.

Beavertail Trail, Beavertail State Park

A relaxing hike made to enjoy the oceans views of the Narragansett Bay. The Beavertail Trail is a short 2.3 mile hike frequented by locals and has benches scattered along the trail, making it easy to stop and take in the scenery.

Carrs Pond Trail

Carr’s Pond And Tarbox Pond Trail

A 4 mile loop wrapping around Carr’s Pond and extending to Tarbox Pond, the trail is fairly easy but can be muddy depending on the weather. This is a great hike to experience the nature of Rhode Island and is fairly peaceful to traverse. While the trail isn’t very difficult, some people have reported issues with navigation as the trail markings might not be the easiest to spot.

Long Pond Woods Trail

Located in Hope Valley Rhode Island, this trail takes you past a pond and through some small scrambles that may be challenging if you have knee or leg problems. Long Pond Woods Trail is a common hike for bird watchers and hikers just looking to experience the outdoors without going on a strenuous adventure, but still want a slight challenge. This is a personal account, but the trail is still rated moderate. While it may only be slightly challenging for me, for those with cardiac conditions or leg problems, it may be more challenging.

The entire trail is 4.5 miles long. It’s not the longest hike, but like I said, that distance can take quite a toll if you’re not prepared for it.

More Hikes in Rhode Island

These are what I consider to be the best hikes in Rhode Island, it doesn’t mean there aren’t more! For a full list of hiking trails in the Ocean State, check out this resource!

Best Boonie Hats for Outdoors, Camping, and Fishing 2022

Best Boonie Hats

Best Boonie Hats on the Market – Buyers Guide 2021

The origin of the boonie hat can be hard to pinpoint. You could go back over 100 years to when they were called “bucket hats” and were made of wool in a shape resembling modern boonie hats.

Eventually, these convenient hats were adopted by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. The hats were issued with a wide brim encircling the entire hat. There were slight variations made to the hats over the years, some adding branch loops to allow attaching foliage to.

Commonly referred to as the “Daisy Mae” hat, these denim and herringbone twill hats would become the boonie hats that we know today.

The boonie hat or bush hat, was a vital piece of equipment for protecting the wearer from the hot sun and rain while working outdoors. This was noticed by many outdoorsmen in the 1980’s and was even popularized further when Crocodile Dundee wore one in his movies.

Something as simple as a hat doesn’t just become popular without reason, these are amazing for hiking and camping! I have two I picked up in Israel that I now carry everywhere with me on outdoor trips!

The type of bush hat you get will depend on preference and the uses, so let’s get to recommending the options for the best boonie hat to fit any need!

The hat itself is 100% nylon with a polyester lining, making it great water and stain resistant.

Additionally, there is an adjustable strap to fit most sizes. Like most boonie hats, it comes with a chin strap to ensure it stays in place when you’re cruising along in a boat as well.

Pros

  • Mesh top for breathability
  • Neck drape for additional sun coverage
  • Adjustable strap
  • Adjustable sizing around the head

Cons

  • Easy to store but not as compact as other hats

9. Dorfman Pacific Men’s Outback Hat Review

dorfman pacific outback hat review

The Dorfman is exactly what you expect to see when someone says it’s an “Outback Hat”. A combination of 52% cotton to breathe and 48% polyester to remain durable, the Dorfman Booney Hat is a great option for the casual camper or hiker. Despite being 52% cotton, this hat also provides decent resistance against rain and wet weather conditions.

There is also a lining on the inner rim of the hat that helps absorb sweat on those extra hot days and it’s rated UPF 50+, making it a great summer hat overall.

Pros

  • Vent holes for breathability and drying
  • Cotton and polyester – breathable and sturdy
  • Adjustable chin strap

Cons

  • Hat sizes run slightly larger than labeled

10. Rothco Camo Boonie Hat For Fishing

Rothco Boonie Hat For Fishing

Like the best boonie hats origin from the Vietnam War, this hat is a reminder of that original. A camo boonie hat that comes in a variety of camouflage patterns, this is easily the best military boonie hat you’ll find.

It’s simple and covers all exposed areas of your face from the sun. On top of that, this military hat has vent holes for breathability and fast drying, is easily foldable for fast storage, and is a 45/55 mixture of cotton to polyester. This combo is the perfect mixture to maintaining a cool temperature but being durable.

Pros

  • Straps for extra items
  • Cotton and polyester – breathable and sturdy
  • Adjustable chin strap

Cons

  • Tight fitting

Final Thoughts

Not every hat will fit every head, but if you’re looking for a hiking or fishing hat, there is a boonie hat out there for you. Some have specific parts that make them better for certain activities, it just takes a little research to find the best boonie hat for you. I hope this guide helped!

Delicious Salisbury Steak Recipe

salisbury steak recipe

Having a go-to Salisbury steak recipe is a must for any home cookbook. I usually make mine in a slow cooker but sometimes I want them right away!

This recipe is for a classic Salisbury steak, but even that comes with some solid flavor. The nice sauce, mushrooms, and onion make this classic dish delightful.

All that being said, feel free to spice up the recipe yourself. I’m a big fan of finding a good recipe and doing my own thing with it.

Preparing the Salisbury Steak

salisbury steak recipe

Start off making the meat patties by mixing beef, egg, salt, pepper, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, and optionally the French Onion Soup. Mash together using your hands to form 6 solid patties. I notice sometimes I have to add more breadcrumbs to get them to stick together better, so add a little at a time if you’re having trouble getting the patties to hold.

Cook the patties! Heat oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. It usually takes about 5 minutes per patty, so cook in batches if possible and remove when done.

Gravy time! Add in the onions and cook until they’re soft. Then add mushrooms until they’re golden brown. Add in beef broth, tomato paste, and Worcestershire sauce and stir. In a separate bowl, mix cornstarch and a tsp of water to add to the skillet. Stir well and cook until thick.

Finally, add the patties back to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. This is just to heat the patties through and once done, garnish with parsley.

What Can I Make With Salisbury Steak?

While you can choose any side dish, Salisbury steak goes great with mashed potatoes, especially with the gravy.

If you’re not a fan though, green beans are a great alternative and healthy!

FAQ About Salisbury Steak

Salisbury steak is a relatively simple recipe but does take some practice to perfect. There are also a few common questions about this recipe that I think people should have answers to. The next few paragraphs are to discuss some of the frequently asked questions about Salisbury steak!

Is Salisbury Steak Healthy?

Overall, Salisbury steak is not considered healthy as it’s high in fats, carbs, and sodium.

This isn’t a big surprise considering the ingredients require breadcrumbs, butter, and oil. You can always limit the amount of these ingredients in your recipe to ease any worries.

Is Salisbury Steak Keto Friendly?

Most recipes you’ll find, including this one, aren’t keto-friendly. A lot of the ingredients used are higher in carbs but there are recipes out there that substitute the high carb ingredients for less carb intensive ones.

Thankfully, beef can be low carb depending on the kind you get, so you won’t have to substitute beef.

Is Salisbury Steak Gluten Free?

Most Salisbury steak recipes will not be gluten-free. There are a few ingredients that may be dangerous, especially from cross-contamination, but the obvious example of a non-gluten ingredient is the breadcrumbs used. There are gluten-free breadcrumbs on the market though, so if you want to make a gluten-free Salisbury steak, there are options!

People are no longer so easily satisfied by the mere travel impressions of some outsider much like themselves. Instead, they gravitate towards writers who actually have lived not simply in, but inside, a location for an extended period, as one lives inside one’s clothes.” – George Fetherling

96. “Prague, we are told, is the most “magical”, the most “mystical” city in Europe, the continent’s one-time capital of astrology and alchemy, its ghetto the birthplace of the mysterious and menacing Golem and home to all manner of esotericism, hermeticism and witchcraft.” – Richard Burton

Are Takis Vegan, Dairy Free, Gluten Free?

Are Takis Vegan?

Takis have become very popular recently and it’s no surprise how delicious they are. The answer to whether they’re vegan isn’t so simple though.

Like most chip brands, Takis come in a variety of flavors. While I haven’t tried every flavor, the most popular brand (the Fuego Flavor) is vegan (for some) as far as ingredients go. But, the artificial colors used such as Red 40 Lake and Yellow 6 Lake are tested on animals.

It’s up to you to decide whether or not you’re willing to accept that ingredients were tested on animals, but no animal ingredients are used in the chip.

Takis themselves are made from a corn-based recipe, which alone would make them vegan. However, additional ingredients in some flavors take them out of the vegan-friendly category.

Vegan Flavors of Takis

So what flavors of Takis don’t include animal ingredients?

As I stated above, the Fuego flavor doesn’t have animal ingredients but has ingredients that were tested on animals. These are flavors that fit into that category of not having any animal ingredients inside of the recipe itself.

  • Fuego (Purple Bag)
  • Nitro (Black & Red Bag)
  • Salsa Brava (Yellow Bag)
  • Zombie Flavor (Green Bag)

Are Takis Dairy Free?

Takis has a few delicious flavors and we’ve already covered if they were vegan or not. Since dairy is an ingredient that isn’t dairy-free, then all of the previously mentioned vegan flavors are also dairy-free!

So yes, some Takis are dairy-free such as the Fuego, Nitro, Salsa Brava, and Zombie Flavor bags.

However, if you want to try the Crunchy Fajitas, Xplosion, and Guacamole flavors, I would take a step back. Those flavors are not dairy-free and contain milk in their ingredients.

Are Takis Gluten Free?

What about Takis gluten-free status?

Takis come in various flavors, all of which contain some kind of corn, nut, or potato. While those ingredients are necessarily gluten, they are allergens and important to keep in mind.

As far as gluten goes, none of the Takis flavors are gluten-free. So if you have celiacs or you’re sensitive to gluten, then you should avoid Takis!

Summary

Takis’ main flavor Feugo is vegan if you’re ok eating foods that use Red 40 Lake and Yellow 6 Lake. Those ingredients were tested on animals but no animal ingredients are included in Takis.

Also, if you’re looking to learn about Takis halal status, we cover it in our ‘Are Takis Halal?‘ post.

AMAZING Places to Visit in Georgia – [TRAVEL GUIDE]

Places to Visit in Georgia

Best Places to Visit in Georgia Inspiration

I’m very excited to write this post as Georgia is not just a beautiful place to visit, but it’s also where I was born and raised! Most people think of rednecks and country music when they mention Georgia (and they’re partially right to do so), but there’s so much more to see and do in this amazing state!

There’s actually so much to do that I tried my hardest to narrow down the possibilities, but still had to organize them into separate categories just to make it a little easier to read. So let’s not take all day, what are the best places to visit in Georgia?

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES!

Georgia is a gorgeous collection of forest and greenery, so it’s only right to start with the outdoor adventures you can take. I’ve listed my favorite three below but by no means is this list comprehensive.

1. Stone Mountain Park:

Stone Mountain Georgia

Stone Mountain Park is only 26(ish) minutes east from the center of Atlanta. It’s a fairly well-known place and can get crowded during the summer months. We went a little later when it was starting to cool off, so there was minimal foot traffic and no stampedes thankfully. Also BRING WATER! Not because there isn’t any, but you will be walking around a lot and staying hydrated is important! Especially if you’re going during a summer month.

Depending on what you’re into, Stone Mountain has options for camping, winter events, and other live events that go on throughout the year. I recommend checking out their website to see what kind of things they have planned. In fact, there’s a bit too much to do there for me to mention in one post. Personally, Linn and I just wanted to get some hiking in and see the top of this gigantic rock!

Stone Mountain Cable Car

We were grateful to see they have a lift to the top of the mountain (probably because hiking it would be near impossible), so we began our journey there! Now I’m not necessarily afraid of heights, but being in a tin bucket that high made my nerves a little shaky. But you do get used to it after a while. We made it to the top and were greeted by park workers and were allowed to explore the top of the dome. They also have quite a bit of information on how it formed and the history around the mountain (I love learning on trips!).

2. Tybee Island

Tybee Island

This magnificent place is just along the coast next to Savannah, GA. You’ll see Savannah mentioned here more than once since it’s basically the best place to visit in Georgia if you’ve never truly experienced the south.

I spent the fourth of July here and there’s tons of rich culture to explore and oh man the FOOD! I grew up with things deep fried and this was nostalgia central.

I didn’t stay too long on Tybee island, and regret it. But if you’re looking for some beach fun and experience a Georgia coast, this is the best place to do it!

3. Callaway Gardens

Callaway Gardens Georgia

Callaway Gardens is mentioned here and there for things to do in Georgia, but personally I loved the free roam aspect and it became one of my favorite places (it’s a bit romantic too given the right time of year). Callaway Gardens is similar to Stone Mountain in that there is a plethora of things to do and so little time. So, we focused on only the gardens and just exploring ourselves. If you’ve interested in events, golf, or other things happening during your time there, definitely check out their schedule!

As far as the gardens themselves go, there are walk paths basically everywhere. Plus, most of the gardens can be experienced indoors as they manage the climate and other conditions, so it can still be enjoyed in bad weather. There’s also an awesome butterfly garden where we learned a little more about them than we bargained for and got to basically live a Disney princesses dream for half an hour.

GEORGIA MUSEUMS!

Ok, so those are awesome places for outdoor adventures in Georgia. But what if you’re a history buff like me? What if you want to learn and experience some past culture? Well the next two are perfect suggestions for that!

1. World of Coca Cola

Coca Cola Museum

I know, a strange ‘museum’? But trust me, Georgians love their Coca Cola and put plenty of effort into make this museum worthwhile! There are numerous exhibits inside with plenty to see and experience. Their general admissions tickets are roughly $17, or were when I went, and of course there are discounts for seniors, youth, and toddlers. It’s honestly not a steep price for what they offer.

You get to sample different flavors of coke dispersed and sold in other countries, see the rich history behind the company and their secret formula, and even a sneak peek into bottling! I know, probably not the most exciting thing when you read it here. But trust me, it’s a wonderful experience.

2. National Infantry Museum

National Infantry Museum Columbus

This one is special on my list since I not only loved it, I also grew up about 30 minutes away. So as soon as they opened (both of my grandfathers and myself served, so we’re pro military history), we went straight there to check it out.

I do have to offer a bit of warning. This place is not something you go to just see. The way the curators have the exhibits laid out for you to experience is truly awe-inspiring and will be emotional. Especially if you’re like me and have a family and personal history in the military. There really isn’t any experience like this museum and to be honest, if you’re into truly experiencing history, forget about the other destinations on this list and just go here.

You walk through the exhibits and are greeted with some of the best history curation you can find. All of your senses are bombarded and emotion rushes over you. You see sites of infantry soldiers storming beaches and navigating trenches, while simultaneously hearing the roar of helicopters drowning out the sounds of leaders shouting orders to their men. The vibration of tank tracks rolling on the ground next to you. While no group of sensations can bring you close enough to the stress felt by the soldiers who lived it, this museum does the best in my opinion, to bring you to an emotional point that no other place does.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve visited so I’m not sure if things have changed much. But I strongly believe that experiencing history should be felt, not simply read. And this museum over delivered on my expectations.

If you’re curious about a few of their exhibits, or just want more information, check them out here!

HISTORICAL INTEREST

I didn’t put too many museums since Georgia has some interesting museums, but none jump out quite like the ones mentioned, onto historical interests!

1. Savannah (ALL OF IT)

Savannah GA

I mentioned earlier in this post that Savannah would pop up again. Oh man, this city is so rich in history and there’s so much to experience. Keep in mind, the United States of America isn’t that old in comparison to other nations. So, when you’re comparing the history of Bavaria or London, to the history of a place in the USA, then of course there will be more that happened in Europe. Even considering that, the amount of crazy history that has occurred in this amazing city is astonishing. I mean, it’s been around almost 300 years and has burned down twice and almost a third time during Sherman’s March. Basically, this city has seen some s@*#.

Despite the terrors and negative occurrences that have plagued Savannah’s past, it emerged a more beautiful city than any other in Georgia (in my opinion). In fact, I usually recommend that you explore a city by yourself and just research the history… Not this time. There are hidden gems and amazing things to learn from this place and I STRONGLY recommend booking a professional tour! There are history tours through the city, about the filming of Forrest Gump (since some awesome shots were taken there), and even ghost tours!

For more info on Savannah, check out Explore Georgia’s section on Savannah.

Westville

Oh boy, I remember going here for a field trip when I was in middle school (yes, I’ve been experiencing Georgia that long) and have been back a few times throughout the years. At the time of writing this, they are currently moving from their previous location and will now be in Columbus GA. I’m not sure if the grand opening has happened yet, but hopefully it has, because I loved this place! Be sure to check their availability here.

Basically, the whole place is an 1800s town, literally everything is old fashioned. You walk around getting to experience a culture long gone. Get carted around in a horse drawn carriage, visit your local blacksmith, even see how they make cotton into clothing! This was definitely a highlight of my childhood that I look forward to taking the girlfriend to when it reopens!

Fort McAllister State Park

Fort McCallister

The final destination recommendation for exploring Georgia. There’s quite a bit to do here depending on what you fancy. From picnics, camping, hiking, cottages, and a civil war museum. There’s plenty of history to be felt here and a lot to experience.

There are still remnants of confederate fortifications and barracks, so you can walk the grounds and have a glimpse into the past during our nations civil war. Obviously this isn’t a historical site you go to ‘enjoy’. It’s a place to be somber and take in what it took for the USA to get to where it is.

Overall

There’s a lot to do in Georgia. I’ve spent roughly 19 of the last 26 years of my life in Georgia and was always fascinated at the rich history to be discovered. If you want to look at more places, Explore Georgia is a great resource and very easy to navigate (link below). There are also plenty of options for things to do in Atlanta for the gay or LGBTA community! If there are any questions or something specific you want to ask a Georgia native, just leave a comment below! Especially let me know if you have some better ideas for places to see!
